In January 2023, U.S. Water was awarded a three-year contract with two additional one-year renewals with the City of Lauderhill, Florida to operate their Water Treatment Plant. The contract value is $1.1 million dollars annually. The City of Lauderhill is located in Central Broward County, Florida and has a population of 72,000. The facility is a lime softening plant that has treatment capacity for 16 million gallons per day (MGD) but is currently producing approximately 6.2 MGD of potable water to customers.
The source of the City’s water is groundwater. Raw water is extracted from the Biscayne aquifer through six wells. Raw water is treated with lime-softening processes and filtration. Following filtration, water is disinfected using chlorine, ammonia and later is fluoridated on its way to the two ground storage tanks (3 MG each). Finished water is distributed to customers via two separate high service pump stations. The distribution system is composed of more than 120 miles of pipe and has a remote storage tank (2 MG). Solids collected in the accelerator units as well as the filter backwash recovery system are pumped to a sludge thickener and two vacuum dewatering belt presses.
Our relationship with the City of Lauderhill began in early 2009, initially providing relief operation to cover staffing shortages. In May 2009, U.S. Water quickly resolved a City-wide water shortage and restored water production allowing the City to resolve water storage levels and meet the demands of it customers. Following this event, the City immediately requested that U.S. Water provide full relief operations staffing of the treatment facility. U.S. Water was able to provide a full replacement of staff and immediately assumed operation of the facility. Upon our initial engagement with the City of Lauderhill, we identified numerous deficiencies and were able to assist the City with expediting those identified repairs.
